When I looked at this portrait of Cooper, a perfect model, I realized that some areas of the painting needed some work. I have been considering how to use new computer technologies and traditional art media in my artwork, and I was thrilled. I am excited to explore the possiblities!

"Dance of the Studio Pixies" was my solution to the call made by Craig Roland on the social network, Art Education 2.0. He said to all of the members, "In an effort to tap the creativity of this growing global collective, I’d like to propose a collaborative photographic project I’ve titled “My Space/Your Space” that we can all easily participate in and that will help us to get to know each other better". The idea was simple—Show where we worked, taught, played, or made art.

The inspiration for this image came at midnight, after spending hours sorting art materials, tools, paintings and paper in my studio, I grabbed my camera and headed out into the cool night for a much needed break. This late night housekeeping came about because I am moving north to teach art, and wander the rural countryside of the Poconos looking for interesting places to photograph or paint.

From a technical standpoint, I took this photograph from the outside looking in, standing about 20 feet away. I knew wouldn't be able hold my digital camera steady enough and the image would be out of focus, but I felt that might add to my concept of an artist in transition, the art spirit flying to a new and exciting place. After importing the photo, I used the elementary paint program to spray paint pixels in a swarm like fashion, the rest of the tweaking and color correction was done in Photoshop.

This had been a special space for me and this image is homage to the wonderful ideas that swirled around and sometimes landed to form art.

My Sister and Niece-Portraits of Hope

I only had a disposable black and white camera with me that day. We had hit the road, with camping gear, children and lots of hope of having a relaxing long weekend. We met down at the Maryland seashore where the wild ponies roam, on a weekend before the rush of summer tourists. I had wanted to take lots of pictures and try to come up with some ideas for large scale drawings for my BFA show this fall.

I asked my sister and her daughter if they would climb up into the lifeguard stand and pose for me. I loved the architectural design and weathered wood of this lone structure on the beach. Its tall, stately presence and the strong, sturdy cross posts reminded me of how much strength one must have in life. I was my sister's "lifeguard" during that difficult time, my sister is getting a divorce.

She gingerly climbed up to the seat after deciding her arty sister had a plan worth pursuing and I had her look to the right, I left one lone post in the background after editing out much of the clutter in Photoshop. I felt the post represented the past. In the photograph of "Catydid", her youngest daughter, I left two posts standing apart, representing her parents' separation. It took some Photoshop editing but I am pleased with the results.

A Trek into Large Scale Digital Drawing

What do you do when you need a very large figure drawing for your final assignment and your so sick of traditional mediums? You go digital. What I have included in this post is the product of an intense, 2 day dive into Photoshop. I used it as a creative drawing tool and really had a lot of fun learning all of the brushes and filters. I was teaching the next day, so during my lunch break I took my DVD file over to my favorite Minuteman Press and said, " Please do it up as large as you can." So my final artwork ended up being 4' x4' !!! It really made an impression in class. God, I love technology................
